When it comes to hygiene, Deodorants or Antiperspirants are part of our daily routines. Whether we’re fresh from the gym or heading into work, a little spray can go a long way to making us feel crisp and clean. But the truth is, we’re often spraying toxic chemicals into sensitive areas – and we don’t even know it.
The key difference between antiperspirants and de
odorants is in the name: antiperspirants stop you perspiring (aka sweating, or glowing as the case may be) whereas deodorants either cover the odours s
weat creates or tackles the bacteria in sweat to stop you smelling.
Back in the 80s, companies like Gillette trademarked slogans like, ‘Never let them see you sweat’ which left the general population in fear of sweating.
Sweat patches are seen as unhygienic and disgusting, but it’s one of the main ways our bodies release toxins from our systems and regulate our body heat.
There’s a real physical danger to overusing antiperspirants. The aluminium, used to block the pores of your skin to prevent sweating, is a neurotoxin. Studies have linked aluminium to breast cancer, Alzheimer’s and dementia. Some deodorants aren’t much better. Many conventions deodorants contain parabens (which can cause allergic reactions), triclosan (which has been linked to skin cancer and thyroid issues) and aluminium.
So what do we do? We don’t want to be smelly, but it’s not worth risking your health over? Say it with me – Natural Deodorants. Natural deodorants use, as you can probably guess, natural ingredients such as Salt, Cocoa Butter, Coconut oil, Almond oil, and Tea Tree oil to create a refreshing alternative to the horror’s we’ve described in the previous paragraph. These ingredients promote soft skin, protect against UV damage, absorb odours and act as an antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory. Any natural deodorant you use should have these antibacterial properties, otherwise, it won’t work. You’ll simply be rubbing the grime and grit that has come out of your skin back into it.
