Epsom Salts: For the Mind

We’ve spoken about stress before, and the damaging impact it can have on you: emotionally, mentally, and physically. By the end of this blog, I’m hoping, you’ll agree that Epsom salts could be the perfect, small and convenient addition to your lifestyle to help you with stress, relax your mind and prepare you for a good night’s sleep.

I’m going to start this particular blog with a short science lesson! Epsom salts are a magnesium sulphate compound, which includes magnesium (used in energy creation, protein formation, gene maintenance, muscle movement and nervous system regulation), sulphur (which acts as an antibacterial within your skin, and reduces inflammation) and oxygen (I don’t need to tell you how important that chemical is to the body, do I?) These are common enough chemicals that we find within our bodies, involved in hundreds of chemical reactions within your heart, brain and muscles at any moment.

When Epsom salts are mixed with water, they dissolve and release magnesium and sulphate ions, which it is believed can be absorbed through your skin. Why should you care about this chemistry lesson? Well, the most common use for Epsom Salts is in your bath, which is why they’re also known as bath salts. Whilst you’re relaxing, listening to music, or reading a book in the bath, your body is receiving the additional nutrients with the benefits mentioned above.

Magnesium is thought to help your body produce melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleep. So adding Epsom Salts to your bath before you go to bed will relax your muscles and encourage the hormones needed for a good night’s sleep. Who can say no to that? You can also add essential oils such as Lavender and Chamomile to promote relaxation before you sleep. It reduces anxiety, relieves stress, and allows you to process information more efficiently. And as we all know, the first thing you need for a good day ahead, was a good night’s sleep before! Well-balanced magnesium levels are important for maintaining enzyme and hormone systems in the body.
